“A vibrant, violent and tragic thriller” - Alfonso Rivera, CINEUROPA

Toro from Festival Fantasia on Vimeo.

When Toro informs his boss Rafael Romano that he’s had enough of the criminal life, the latter gives him one last job to complete. For this ultimate heist, Toro enlists the help of his two brothers, Antonio and Lopez. When they unfortunately find themselves cornered by the police, Lopez manages to flee the scene while Toro and Antonio get chased by the cops, resulting in Toro losing control of his vehicle and causing an accident that kills his brother. A few years later, just as Toro is about to complete his sentence, Lopez resurfaces after a long exile. Toro has no interest in stepping back into a life of crime, but when his niece Diana gets kidnapped by Romano, he has no choice but to try to help her. He goes to meet his former boss to try to defuse the situation. The sit-down doesn’t go as planned. Bullets fly and blood is shed, unleashing a dangerous criminal on the heels of Toro’s gang.

Kike Maíllo created quite a stir on the festival circuit in 2011 with the sci-fi film EVA. For his second feature, he brings us the super-realist action film TORO, a highly stylized, cleverly written and flawlessly directed picture imbued with the same qualities that had won him a Goya for EVA. Helping him here are the talented actors Mario Casas (UNIT 7) and Luis Tosar (SLEEP TIGHT), who form the perfect duo. Together, the three of them deliver the perfect balance of action, drama and comedy. Holding nothing back, to the spectator’s great pleasure, TORO is all one could hope for in an action film: car chases, gunfights and hand-to-hand fighting. For the past few years now, Spanish genre cinema has surprised us with its constant reinvention. With filmmakers like Kike Maíllo, the flame is far from growing faint.
