Lowlife Love from Festival Fantasia on Vimeo.

Tetsuo loves to think of himself as an indie filmmaker between jobs. Yet, he’s more of a 39-year-old loser, a sex-crazed jerk, and a deadbeat lowlife. Forever “between films” (he had one hit on the festival circuit ages ago), he runs a “cinema club,” a production company, and an acting school which operate more or less like rackets for budding (and mostly talentless) actors, screenwriters and directors to keep busy for very little or no money at all. When Tetsuo meets Ken and Hiromi, the tables turn. Here are two potentially talented people to exploit, for a change! The problem is, Tetsuo’s not the only one to think so, and his many messy relationships are about to get a whole lot messier…

For this first production, acclaimed U.K. distributor Third Window Films teams up with Eiji Uchida again (GREATFUL DEAD) to take us on an ugly and revealing tour of the Japanese indie/no-budget film scene. The sight, to say the least, is not pretty, and the resulting film is far from self-congratulatory. Instead, Uchida offers an undeniably personal film based on keen, candid observations, exploring the many ways people stab each other in the back in the name of the art! Starring Kiyohiko Shibukawa (LOVE & PEACE, IT’S ME, IT’S ME) alongside the legendary Denden (LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE, COLD FISH to name a few), LOWLIFE LOVE toys with the line between tragedy and comedy and unfolds with much self-deprecating humour, taking you behind and beyond the screen for an uncomfortable yet illuminating portrait of an industry on a road to perdition.
