Cheval Noir Jury
V.P. of Sales & Acquisitions, Mongrel Media
Andrew Frank is Mongrel Media’s Vice President of Sales and Acquisitions. In addition to overseeing the release schedule and customer relationships, he acquires films and negotiates deals at festivals and markets with an eye toward video and VOD release. Prior to working at Mongrel, he was a consultant for Robert Redford’s Sundance Cinemas flagship theatre in Madison, WI. From 1999-2004, he owned and ran Visions Cinema in Washington, DC, a unique venue - part theatre for foreign and independent films, and part restaurant/bar. Before entering the film business, Andrew had a career in the coffee business; he invented and trademarked the Frappuccino.
Roxanne Benjamin is an independent producer and director. She served as t he Head of Acquisitions and Development for Snoot Entertainment (YOU’RE NEXT, THE GUEST, FAULTS). Prior to joining Snoot, she ran the Bloody Disgusting Selects label, the genre division of management entity The Collective, where she oversaw the acquisition and niche distribution of 12 titles per year. She also developed and produced festival favorites V/H/S and V/H/S/2, both of which premiered in the Sundance Film Festival Midnight section in two consecutive years. Both films were acquired and released by Magnolia Pictures. She holds a Masters in Entertainment Business Management from Carnegie Mellon University and has worked as an executive and producer in Television and Feature Programming, Production, Acquisitions, and Distribution since 2005.
Actor and writer
François Létourneau is an actor and writer. A graduate of Montreal’s Conservatory of Dramatic Arts in 1999, he has written and acted for theatre, cinema and television. François wrote the series LES INVINCIBLES with the director Jean-François Rivard, More recently, again working with Rivard, co-wrote SÉRIE NOIRE, a series that that took home 11 Gémeaux awards, including two for François, Best Dramatic Text and Best First Dramatic Role. In film, he has appeared in Ricardo Trogi’s QUÉBEC-MONTRÉAL, Patrick Sauvé’s CHEECH, and FUNKYTOWN by Daniel Roby. He will next be seen in PAUL À QUÉBEC, the film adaptation of the graphic novel by Michel Rabagliati, directed by François Bouvier.
Co-founder, Film4 Frightfest
Ian Rattray is co-director and co-founder of Film4 FrightFest. Based in London, FrightFest is the U.K.’s premiere fantasy and horror film festival, featuring over 80 films in an intense five-day event. He has almost 30 years experience in all areas of the U.K. film industry including exhibition, programming and distribution. For 10 years, Ian was the head programmer of a U.K. chain of cinemas including the legendary Prince Charles in central London.
Director of Development, Blumhouse Productions
Ryan Turek is the Director of Development at Blumhouse Productions, the cutting-edge company behind such films as WHIPLASH, INSIDIOUS and the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY series. A former horror journalist, he has contributed to Fangoria and Rue Morgue magazines and, for several years, he served as the managing editor of Shock Till You Drop. During that time, he wrote and directed STILL SCREAMING, a feature-length documentary about the SCREAM series. In 2014, he also acted as an acquisitions rep, helping films like THE CANAL, MISSIONARY and PRESERVATION find a U.S. release via The Orchard. He’s a lover of slasher movies and considers himself an ally of the Manitou.

CEO, Epic Pictures
In 2007, Patrick Ewald co-founded Epic Pictures Group as its CEO along with its COO, Shaked Berenson. Over the past eight years, he has grown the company from an international sales company to a leading independent studio with a core focus on developing, financing, producing, and distributing its own productions as well as third-party content. In 2013, Epic Pictures Group launched Epic Pictures Releasing, its U.S. theatrical distribution and home entertainment subsidiary. Mr. Ewald has over 19 years’ experience as a senior level executive and has been involved in the development, financing, producing and marketing of over 100 films. Most recently, he produced/executive produced the Sundance film and SXSW audience award winner, TURBO KID, horror anthology TALES OF HALLOWEEN, ENTERTAINMENT (also in Sundance), WHO GETS THE DOG?, BLACK BEAUTY, and JERUZALEM.
Editor-in-chief, Rue Morgue Magazine
The editor-in-chief of Rue Morgue, one of the world’s largest horror magazines, Dave Alexander also programs and hosts the publication’s monthly CineMacabre movie night screenings in Toronto. In addition, he’s a published fiction writer, has given a talk for the Black Museum, and in 2009 premiered his short film FALLOW at Fantasia. In 2012, he created the poster art show If They Came From Within: An Alternative History of Canadian Horror Movie for Fantasia, which featured filmmakers such as Bruce McDonald, Jason Eisener, Vincenzo Natali and Astron 6. Dave also regularly appears at fan conventions, on television and radio, and in documentaries, such as WHY HORROR?.
Writer and artist Jimmy Beaulieu (Non-aventures, Comédie sentimentale pornographique, À la faveur de la nuit, Le Temps des siestes) has done a bit of everything in the comics field. Notably, he founded the imprints Méchanique generale and Colosse. He devotes most of his energy these days to teaching, and to his own creations. He regularly releases expanded editions of his earlier work.
International Sales, Producer, Nikkatsu Corporation
Emico started as an intern at Desperado in 2006, where she met an important mentor in producer Yuji Ishida (CONFESSIONS), from whom she learned all the basics about the film business. Through Ishida’s introduction, she joined Nikkatsu in 2009, and first worked in theatre marketing, then production. Under veteran producer Yoshinori Chiba (KILLERS), she was part of the team that set up the Sushi Typhoon genre label. Although she was in production, she also handled overseas promotion and North American distribution deals for Sushi Typhoon titles, which gave her the basic experience of international sales. Since 2013, she is working as the Sales Representative for Nikkatsu Films. Last year, she was chosen as one of the future leaders for Sales and Distribution by Screen International. Her credits as Assistant Producer include Sion Sono’s COLD FISH, Noboru Iguchi’s KARATE-ROBO ZABORGAR.
Filmmaker and artistic director
Hailing from Montreal and recipient of a degree in graphic design from UQAM, Benoit Godbout has been both a director and art director for various animation studios, on productions such as LES GRANDES GUEULES S’ANIMENT, PÉRUSSE CITÉ, BLAISE LE BLASÉ, TOUPIE ET BINOU and VIE DE QUARTIER. He was involved in the conceptual stages of the animated features LA GUERRE DES TUQUES 3D and LES NOMBRILS, and co-directed the documentary AU QUÉBEC AVEC TINTIN for Télé-Québec, alongside Jean-Philippe Duval. He is also the creator of the science fiction comic-book series Académie des chasseurs de primes from the publisher Les 400 coups, and has developed numerous projects in both comics and animation. Benoit earned two Gémeaux awards for his work as director on the animated series PÉRUSSE CITÉ and BLAISE LE BLASÉ.
Marie-Josée Saint-Pierre is a Montreal-based filmmaker most notable for her animated documentary films. After completing a BFA with honours in animation and an MFA in film production at Concordia University, she attended a Berlinale Talent Campus at the Berlin Film Festival in 2004, the Talent Lab at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2007 and participated in a three-month residency in Sapporo, Japan in 2009. Her films include POST-PARTUM, MCLAREN’S NEGATIVES, PASSAGES, THE SAPPORO PROJECT, FEMELLES, FLOCONS and JUTRA. MCLAREN’S NEGATIVES, her first animated documentary, was shown in over 150 film festivals and received approximately 20 awards, including the Jutra Award for best animated film. In 2014, the National Film Board of Canada released JUTRA, her animated documentary portrait on Quebec filmmaker Claude Jutra that was selected for the Director’s Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival. The film won the Canadian Screen Award for best short documentary as well as the Jutra Award for best short animated film. She is currently directing the short film OSCAR, based on the life and work of jazz pianist Oscar Peterson.
Johanne Ste-Marie is one of the founding members of the art duo Fluorescent Hill. They have directed commercials for clients such as Burger King, Elections Ontario or Toyota and music videos for artists like Cadence Weapon, N.A.S.A. (feat. Tom Waits & Kool Keith) and The New Pornographers. In 2014, the creative duo launched MIGRATION, their first animated film in the international Festival circuit.
International Short Film Competition Jury
John McNaughton is an acclaimed American film and television director, originally from Chicago, Illinois. His award-winning 1986 feature debut, HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, is one of the most influential genre films of all time, and launched the career of actor Michael Rooker. Among his other credits are THE BORROWER, the Martin Scorsese-produced MAD DOG AND GLORY, NORMAL LIFE, WILD THINGS, and THE HARVEST, the latter of which had its international Premiere at last summer’s Fantasia and was released by IFC this year. Aside from being president of our International Short Film Competition jury, John McNaughton is here with a new project, CARNY KILL, in our co-production market Frontières.
Matthew Hays teaches film studies at Marianopolis College and Concordia University. His articles have appeared in THE GLOBE AND MAIL, THE GUARDIAN, THE NEW YORK TIMES, VICE, THE DAILY BEAST, THE WALRUS, THE ADVOCATE, THE TORONTO STAR, CINEASTE and FANGORIA. His book THE VIEW FROM HERE: CONVERSATIONS WITH GAY AND LESBIAN FILMMAKERS (Arsenal Pulp) won a 2008 Lambda Award. He is the co-editor (with Tom Waugh) of the QUEER FILM CLASSICS book series. He won the Concordia Alumni Association’s award (2007) and the Concordia President’s award (2013) for excellence in teaching. He’s into leather.
Film preservationist, director, Arrow Video
Francesco Simeoni is the director of Arrow Video, a home-video label specializing in cult films, taking in classic genre works, horror and more. He has curated the label since 2010 and is responsible for the acquisition, production and distribution of the label in the United Kingdom and North America. He has a fondness for the Japanese new wave and ’70s investigative thrillers from Italy. In 2015, he is focusing on a series of deluxe edition director’s sets including work by Cronenberg, Fukasaku, Fassbinder and more. He lives in the ‘burbs of London with his wife and son.
Jury court métrage québécois D.I.Y.
Actif en cinéma depuis le début des années 1980, Michel Coulombe dirige longtemps les Rendez-vous du cinéma québécois puis Silence, on court ! qui assure la promotion du court en ligne, en salle et à la télévision. Il produit ensuite plusieurs séries et projets web sur le thème de l’immigration. Associé au Festival international du court métrage de Clermont-Ferrand depuis le début des années 2000, il y co-anime les débats quotidiens. Chroniqueur à la radio et à la télévision depuis plus d’une vingtaine d’années, il est le coauteur du Dictionnaire du cinéma québécois et l’auteur d’un documentaire (Octos dynamos), d’un roman (Méchants patrons !) et d’un livre d’entretiens consacrés au vieillissement (Les forces de l’âge). Il agit régulièrement à titre d’analyste au contenu et de conseiller à la scénarisation.
Depuis la création de La Boîte à Fanny, en 2011, Fanny-Laure Malo a produit près d’une dizaine de court métrages dont Chef de meute de Chloé Robichaud, (Compétition Officielle au Festival de Cannes), Bernard le Grand de Philippe Lupien et Marie-Hélène Viens, ainsi que Toutes des connes de François Jaros, (Sundance Film Festival, Jutra du meilleur court métrage de fiction.) Son premier long métrage, Sarah préfère la course (C. Robichaud), fut de la section Un certain Regard au Festival de Cannes en 2013. Fanny-Laure est en présentement en post production de Amen, le nouveau court métrage de P. Lupien et M.H. Viens, et en pré production de Pays, le prochain long métrage de C. Robichaud. Elle travaille également à la mise en marché de Maurice, le nouveau court de F. Jaros, en plus de développer plusieurs projets, courts et longs.
Ayant grandi avec un crayon dans les mains, c’est d’abord en dessin animé qu’Éric débutera ses études avant de les continuer en production cinématographique. Il fonde par la suite, il fonde Babel ﬁlms et s’occupe de la direction créative de la boîte qui veut offrir des oeuvres authentiques, accessibles et audacieuses. C’est à travers cette dernière qu’il signe la réalisation Temps Mort (Prix Gémeaux 2012 et nommé aux International Digital Emmy Awards) et Projet-M (Gémeaux 2014), deux rares propositions de cinéma de science-ﬁction grandement appréciées par la critique et le public. Passionné de politique et des sciences sociales, il trouve son plaisir à planter ses histoires dans un cinéma de genre engagé et des contextes extraordinaires. À l’été 2015, il est présentement en montage de son premier documentaire intitulé ‘’Yes’’ qu’il a tourné en Écosse lors du référendum.
Cette comédienne aux multiples visages, connait une belle évolution dans le milieu artistique québécois, depuis sa sortie du Conservatoire d’Art Dramatique de Montréal en 2007. Au cours des dernières années, elle a cumulé les premiers rôles dans des émissions et séries télévisées, dont Trauma (Dr. Chrystelle Pierre), Tactik (Marie-Sylvaine Labrie) et l’Appart du 5e (Marianne Pellan). On a également pu la voir dans 30 vies, Rock&Rolland, Penthouse 5-0 et Mauvais Karma. Au Cinéma elle a incarnée Jade Bossé dans le film l’Empire Bo$$é inc, réalisé par Claude Desrosiers, Kagamiko de Mathieu Arsenault et nous pourrons la voir dans Lièvre premier long-métrage du réalisateur Dominic Goyer. Au théâtre nous avons pu la voir sur les planches du Théâtre D’Aujourd’hui dans la pièce Yukonstyle, (mes Martin Faucher) où elle a défendu le rôle de Yuko. Elle a aussi été des distributions des pièces La princesse Turandot (mes Hugo Bélanger) ainsi que Médée, mes Caroline Binet), toutes deux présentées au Théâtre Denise-Pelletier. Elle est également marionnettiste depuis 2013 dans le spectacle Alice au pays des merveilles de la compagnie Tout-à-Trac.
