Polish Fantastic: A Multimedia Presentation by Daniel Bird

Ever suffered through one of the ‘classics’ of Polish cinema and lost the will to live? Fear not, here is the antidote: a whistle-stop tour of the fantastic in Polish literature and cinema. Whether it be the pulp trash of Stefan Grabinski, the brain-melting sci-fi of Stanislaw Lem or the aristocratic shenanigans of Witold Gombrowicz, the fantastic has always featured prominently in Polish literature. Poland has also given cinema some of the masterpieces of fantasy film: THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT, SANATORIUM UNDER THE HOUR GLASS, MOTHER JOAN OF THE ANGELS… Some of Poland's most celebrated auteur filmmakers have frequently delved into the fantastic: Walerian Borowczyk, Roman Polanski and Andrzej Zulawski. Less well known, however, are cult films such as the superhero comedy THE HYDRO RIDDLE, WOLF WOMAN and SEX MISSION... After this presentation, Polish cinema will no longer seem quite so grey! (Presentation in English.)
