Au-delà de l'animation 2013 ("Outer Limits of Animation 2013")

Since 2006, Fantasia has devoted and entire program slot to a selection of each year’s best animated short films. OUTER LIMITS OF ANIMATION invites you on a unique voyage that charts the course from childhood to adulthood. A number of techniques are showcased — animated drawings, manipulated objects, glass painting, pin screen and paper cut-outs, puppets and play clay, pixilation and animated pixels. It all adds up to a hundred minutes of animated shorts from all over.

The intriguing DESTIMAÇÃO by Brazil’s Ricardo de Podestá makes its North American premiere. From China comes the sensuous DOUBLE FIKRET by Haiyang Wang. On the American side, PLANET UTERO by Faiyaz Jafri makes its Canadian premiere while Danny Madden schools us with (NOTES ON) BIOLOGY and Leah Shore unfurls the multicoloured OLD MAN. Mexican animator Sofia Carrillo chose our festival for the Canadian premiere of the bewitching LA CASA TRISTE. Switzerland ships over a pair of shorts, the amusing STOPOVER by Neil Stubbings and the poignant BON VOYAGE by Fabio Friedli. From England comes JAMON by Iria Lopez (a Quebec premiere) and the contemplative ADDRESS IS APPROXIMATE by Tom Jenkins.

From the National Film Board comes a pair of ambitious shorts, Martine Chartrand’s MACPHERSON, based on a song by Félix Leclerc and created through painting on glass, as well as LE GRAND AILLEURS AND LE PETIT ICI, a short by Michèle Lemieux that elevates the pin screen of Alexeïeff-Parker to a metaphor for the universe and its atoms.. Pierre M. Trudeau blesses our fest with the world premiere of the ecumenical RAISED TO BE A HERO. REQUIEM POUR UNE ROMANCE by Jonathan NG makes an effective allusion in juxtaposing the breakup of an Asian couple and an epic martial-arts fight.

This year, OUTER LIMITS OF ANIMATION pays homage to the animation department at Cégep du Vieux Montréal with seven shorts the school has produced in 2013. Discover the worlds of Audrey Beaulé (OPINION), Justine Beaupré (L’INGÉNIEUR DU CIEL), Tanya Desjardins-De Libero (L’ARC EN CIEL), Valérie Gadbois (INCIDENT SUR LA LIGNE ORANGE), Christophe Lalonde-Lavergne (À LA CROISÉE DES CHEMINS), Jonathan Martel (EAU TROUBLE) and Félix Patry (AZUL). And finally, a few choice animated films from the 13th edition of the Dérapage festival at l’Université du Québec à Montréal : ANALOGUE by the collective Oil And Sugar, MÉMOIRE NOYÉE by Léa Lessard and LES LIMBES by Mathieu Lalumière.
