Description

Fandom may never be the same… What do the creator of MACROSS, a Japanese STAR WARS manga-ka, an incredibly kawaii J-pop idol, Sasuke of NARUTO and the founder of Tokyopop all have in common? VAN VON HUNTER, that’s what! This shocking true story follows the exploits of an unknown, unemployed evil-vanquisher from his home in Dikay, through an ill-fated gig in Hollywood, to his surprising ascent to superstardom in Japan and his equally baffling disappearance. It’s all here, featuring Shoji Kawamori (MACROSS), Stu Levy (PRINCESS AI), and Yuri Lowenthal (BEN 10, NARUTO) as Van Von Hunter. Here’s a random pull-quote from our leading man, to convince you to see this movie: “The directors managed to convince me to get naked—except for a wig, swords, and a strategically placed pop-up book—in front of a large group of people. So there’s that.” If you love anime, manga, Japan or just plain ol’ evil and the vanquishing thereof, then this movie will change your life. Otherwise, it will at least make snot come out of your nose, all sticky and gooey—but, you know, in a good way!

From world manga leaders Tokyopop comes this new live-action comedy mockumentary. After some sneak peaks at fan conventions, this screening marks its film festival premiere! It’s also a dream come true for its two co-creators, both fans of Fantasia. Co-director Stu Levy (who will be attending Fantasia as a special guest!) is an international entrepreneur, producer, director and writer across multiple media. He is known for having established the manga market in North America through his pioneering media company, Tokyopop. Co-director Steven Calcote is an award-winning director of commercials, documentaries and digital films from Asia. He has also served as a visual effects producer for Hong Kong’s Menfond Electronic Arts, Disney’s NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS 3-D and Sony’s ULTRAVIOLET. Yuri Lowenthal is a prolific and respected voice actor for anime, feature films, TV series and games. He will be here along with his talented wife, actress Tara Platt, with whom he wrote a book on voice acting. Yuri’s credits include CODE GEASS, NARUTO, BLEACH, BEN 10 and AFRO SAMURAI, as well as the video games Watchmen, X-Men, Spiderman, Halo 2, and Assassin’s Creed. Tara’s credits include NARUTO, BUSO RENKIN and the SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI: PERSONA series. (As a bonus to Fantasia fans, they’re hosting a mini-workshop on the subject of voice acting! Check the Fantasia website for details.)
