A scan of director David Blyth’s career leaves one stunned. At the tender age of 22, he created his first feature film, ANGEL MINE, a controversial gaze at suburban New Zealand couple’s slide into hell. His name went worldwide with 1985’s DEATH WARMED UP, a surprising horror/sci-fi hybrid that’s a cult classic to this day. That was followed by RED-BLOODED AMERICAN GIRL, the comdey MOONRISE with Al Lewis, and a fistful of POWERS RANGERS episodes. TRANSFIGURED NIGHTS and BOUND FOR PLEASURE find Blyth in documentary mode, exploring a theme echoed throughout his filmography: fetishism and its demimonde.
The Web is the perfect means of sharing one’s fantasies and obsessions from the comfort of anonymity. The logged-on gather in chat rooms to express their erotic desires and indulge in rituals of pleasure before their digital cameras. TRANSFIGURED NIGHTS invites us into the world of one such secret community. It’s members come from a number of countries, but while their reasons are even more varied, they are there for one shared reason: a passion for sexually-charged masquerade. By way of Webcams, Blyth assembles the eloquent confessions of the taboo-breaking men and women. With a disconcerting honesty, this experimental doc will make you question your boundaries and draw you to the far frontier of alternative sexuality.
