A new life is starting for Angie, who’s leaving the embrace of her Catholic mother for college studies. As soon as she’s on the campus, she’s off to look for a job. Replying to an ad she plucks from a bulletin board, Angie finds herself on a remote farm before the Stanton family and their adorable little boy. The task seems simple enough. Keep an eye on the sleeping child until the parents return. Alone in the vast and sprawling house, Angie is quickly overtaken by her fears. Anonymous phone calls are shattering her peace of mind, and a Michael Myers type is lurking in the night outside. Likely responsible for a string of disappearance of young women, the eerie creep is pursued by the local sheriff (Bill Moseley). Will Angie be his next victim?

The storyline of BABYSITTER WANTED may sound awfully familiar, but don’t be fooled. Sure, it obeys the venerable rules of the slasher film for a while, but co-directors Jonas Barnes and Michael Manasseri deviously drag things in an unexpected direction. Just as Robert Rodriguez’s FROM DUSK TILL DAWN once did, the film shifts drastically, breathing a gust of originality into a subgenre too often criticized for its redundancy. Another break from slasher-movie standards: BABYSITTER WANTED actually offers a cast of capable actors! In the role of Angie, Sarah Thompson amazes with an apparent fragility hiding a fierce resolve—a worthy successor to Jamie Lee Curtis. And don’t forget Bruce Thomas, hilarious as the dad with a very demanding child. Gore fans, on the other hand, will be delighted with the abundant slice ’n’ dice. Witty, scary and diabolically fun, BABYSITTER WANTED outdoes any of the SCREAM clones you’d care to name.
