There’s a chill in the night air, and dark rumours dance amid the dry, dead leaves kicked up by the wind. That dank and musty old girls’ school… is it true what they say? That terrible things once happened there, that a school nurse performed unspeakable acts on the helpless students –- students whose spirits remain trapped in the walls and twisting corridors of the shadowy depths of the basement? A misfit group of friends, reflecting myriad personalities and motivations (some admirable, others not so much so…), elect to investigate the school’s basement. But terrible, deadly, bloody things are already afoot, and these young people are stepping into the beating heart of a monstrous nightmare that will bring them face to face with an ageless evil!
After making his mark on the independent, balls-over-budget horror movie scene with The Night They Returned, Purple Glow and She-Demons of the Black Sun, Montreal’s Sv Bell –- no stranger to Fantasia’s annual DIY film component – steps up his game substantially with Rise of the Ghosts. It’s a supernatural shocker that boasts the finest effects work and productions values –- sound, lighting acting – of any Bell effort to date. More than anything, though, Bell has spirit to spare –- even if that spirit’s a tormented, bloodthirsty one!
