Miyazaki is cut from the same cloth as Tolkein and Lewis Carroll, inventors of imaginary worlds all three. This film is thus itself a shamanic voyage, a poetic plunge into the universe of Miyazaki and of traditional Japan, one which opens grants us passage into the Ghibli temple, the mythic production studio of Hayao Miyazaki et Isao Takahata.
