Still one of the World’s Dyanamic Dragons!

Hong Kong has one of the most dynamic film industries in the world. In per capita production, Hong Kong ranked first in Asia and second in the world in 2004.

Hong Kong is among the world's largest film exporters. Hong Kong films have also entered the American markets. For instance, House of Flying Daggers, fetched distribution-rights sales of about US$10 million and US$13.8 million, respectively, for the Japanese and North American markets.

Hong Kong's films have been recognized by the international film industry. Apart from buying rights for theatrical distribution, Hollywood is also interested in acquiring rights to remake Hong Kong movies. For example, renowned US director Martin Scorsese has plans to remake Infernal Affairs.

Talented Hong Kong producers, directors and actors – like John Woo, Yuen Wo-ping, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun-fat, Michelle Yeoh and Sammo Hung – have made their names known internationally. Maggie Cheung won the Best Actress award at the 2004 Cannes International Film Festival. Hong Kong’s homegrown director Wong Kar-wai was president of the jury in the Cannes this May.

Hong Kong has a unique advantage in bridging the Chinese mainland with the Western audiences, and opening a window on the world for Chinese audiences. Hong Kong’s film industry has preferential and quota-free access to the huge Chinese mainland market under the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) with China.

Hong Kong has hosted an annual film market since 1997, to promote Hong Kong as a film distribution centre in the region. The 2005 FILMART attracted 352 exhibitors and 2,832 buyers. The FILMART provides a cross-media, cross-industry entertainment platform that promotes cooperation in areas of film financing, distribution, production and post-production, etc.
